Hi Reader, June 8, 1954. Northampton is a few days short of its 300th anniversary. The Daily Hampshire Gazette publishes a tercentenary supplement that is interesting to look back on now, 70 years later. Here’s a little excerpt from the business stories it covered: “The Northampton Institute for Savings, the first savings bank of the town, was granted a charter in 1842. Its incorporators were public-spirited men…” I love that term, public-spirited. History is great for perspective—and learning phrases that have fallen off the radar 😊. And while we’ve done a lot of research for Inc413, including looking at newspapers from 1954, our focus is on the businesses being created in Western Massachusetts today - and the banks, Chambers of Commerce, and government institutions that help them thrive. One such business is Magnetworks. I ran into the co-founders, Eric Singer and Chris Meador, at an Amherst Are Chamber of Commerce event a few months ago. Their business, based in Pittsfield MA, is reimagining the way businesses hire by putting community right at the center of the equation. Businesses can reward people with gifts, subscriptions, cash, and more for helping them fill jobs. When you experience it, you will be wowed too. I’d say that’s a public-spirited endeavor 😉. After our launch on Friday, I look forward to sharing with you many stories like that of Magnetworks. If there is one thing that has surprised me while building this site, it is how under-the-radar-busy the Western Mass entrepreneurship ecosystem is. There is so much happening! Just like that term, public-spirited. Filled with good, but hidden. Hopefully, we can do our little bit to shine a light on some of the movers, catalysts, and makers in the region. We launch on Friday!!!! Please do me a solid and share the news: https://inc413.com goes live on Friday, Nov 1, 2024, at 10am Eastern. Dear Reader Do you use Uber? If so, maybe you've been in the back seat of my car. I’ve done about 500 trips as an Uber Driver in Western Massachusetts. I’ve driven shift workers, partygoers, friends, visiting college parents, and business people everywhere from Goshen to Gill and from Pelham to Pittsfield. How I ended up driving for Uber is a story for another day. When I first started, I watched a ton of videos from other Uber drivers and I wished there was one guide I could follow....
DearReader We launched the site on Friday! And then the server crashed. You’d think we don’t build websites for a living. The server spent most of the day trying to stay on its feet- and failing. In the end, success! We figured it out. It was a minor configuration issue. Anyway, the site is up and is running well. We’re rolling! Thank you for all your support. What do we have on there?
